The first bicycles did not have pedals. This sounds like a manufacturing oversight until you see the larger idea: put two wheels in line, let a rider balance between them, and make walking considerably more interesting.
From Running Machine to Bicycle
German inventor Karl Drais introduced his two-wheeled running machine in 1817. The rider sat on a frame, steered the front wheel, and pushed against the ground with both feet. It was called a Laufmaschine, often translated as running machine, and later became known as a draisine or hobby horse.
Pedal-driven designs appeared decades later. By the late 19th century, chain drive, pneumatic tires, improved brakes, and the diamond-shaped safety-bicycle frame brought the machine much closer to the bicycle we know.
The Penny-Farthing Was Not the Final Answer
The high-wheeler, later nicknamed the penny-farthing, used a huge front wheel because one turn of the pedals drove that wheel directly. A larger wheel traveled farther per rotation, but it also placed the rider high above the road. Mounting was awkward, stopping could be dramatic, and going over the handlebars gave the era a useful appetite for safer designs.
The safety bicycle lowered the rider between similarly sized wheels and used a chain to drive the rear wheel. That layout improved stability and gearing while making bicycles practical for a broader group of riders.
What a Patent Drawing Contributes
A patent grants an inventor limited rights to an eligible invention in exchange for public disclosure. Drawings help explain the components, arrangement, and operation. They are evidence and instruction first, but their fine lines and labeled figures also form a distinctive visual record.
Bicycle patents document incremental improvement rather than a single miraculous leap. Frames, pedals, chains, saddles, tires, brakes, and steering all attracted inventors. Reading the drawings together shows a machine being refined piece by piece.
The bicycle also changed daily mobility. It gave many riders an affordable way to travel farther under their own power and helped reshape ideas about recreation, clothing, roads, and personal independence. The machine's cultural reach became much larger than its compact frame.
Why Bicycle Patent Art Works at Home
Laser-etched birch gives technical linework a warmer setting than office paper. The neutral wood fits workshops, offices, hallways, studios, and rooms already decorated with cycling photographs or equipment. It adds history without asking anyone to hang an entire bicycle above the sofa.

Pairing Patent Art
A single bicycle drawing can stand above a desk or repair bench. For a larger wall, group it with photographs of favorite rides, a route map, or related patent art. Keep spacing and frame tones consistent so the different documents read as a collection.
The bicycle's history is not a straight ride from invention to perfection. It is a long series of clever adjustments, a few precarious ideas, and steady forward motion. In other words, very good material for a wall.
