It may seem hard to believe but traveling away from the ocean can get you to one of the most picturesque waterfronts in the country. Crystal Lake, Michigan, offers an incredible destination for family vacations or intimate getaways because of its crystal-clear beaches, hiking, skiing, and vibrant autumn colors.
In the late 1800s, Crystal Lake experienced a drastic drop in water level when an attempt was made to connect it with Lake Michigan via a channel. Although many considered the project a failure, it created the beautiful sandy beaches tourists and locals have come to know and love.
High-quality birch is laser-cut and glued to form the layers of the lake’s floor, giving the map incredible dimension and beauty. An artist hand-stains the wood to indicate the water and etches points of interest, roads, and other locations into its surface. This is a unique wall map of Crystal Lake showing water depths in seven contour increments from 10 feet down to 165 feet. The lake is a few feet deeper than that, but I think they used average depths in the contours. A minor omission: I wish they had also shown the outlet stream flowing into the Betsie River. There are a couple minor inaccuracies: Nichols Road is wrongly labeled Nicholas Road, and the two ends of Sutter Road don't connect to each other. These are not too obvious and don't detract from the overall presentation. It is ready to hang on the wall right out of the box. This map is very attractive and worth the price.
